A wire stripper is a tool used to strip off the external coating of cables or the insulated coating of electric wires when connecting wires to each other. Wire stripper types include a wire stripper used mainly for stripping insulated coating, a cable stripper used for stripping insulated coating and external coating, and an electrician's knife. Select each tool according to the type and size of the applicable cable. Manual types are available where the coating is stripped with a knife or the coating is gripped and removed with a blade. Automatic types are available where the coating is stripped simply by gripping a handle, without damaging the cable. Universal types are also available that have a scale function or can be used to cut or bend cables, in addition to stripping the coating. Also, while most tools are made for right-handed users, left-handed wire strippers are also available to make them easy to use for left-handed users.
